Who are we?

The aim of the Haverhill Singers is

  • to promote the enjoyment of singing both classical and modern choral music and to perform it in and around Haverhill
  • To contribute socially and culturally to the area.

To achieve these aims we present two or three major concerts a year and a number of smaller events in co-operation with local organisations.(See ‘A typical year’ tab)

We welcome anyone who would like to sing and do not hold auditions. Newcomers are welcome to attend a few rehearsals, without obligation to see how they get on.

We also organise a number of informal social and fund raising events throughout the year.

Our repertoire is wide. In recent times we have sung major works by Mendelssohn, Brahms, Orff, Handel, Bernstein, Elgar and Verdi together with songs by Burt Bacharach, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Andrew Lloyd-Webber and The Beatles.

Our President is Christopher Gurteen whose ancestor, Daniel Gurteen founded the Haverhill ChoralSociety in 1860 and whose family has always maintained support for the society.

Our Musical director is John Clenaghan, who joined us in September 2018, succeeding Jane Wright who had been our MD for fifteen years. John was educated at Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School, Sutton Coldfield, and went on to study music at Colchester and London. He studied piano with John Wolton and Robert Bell in Colchester, also with Timothy Barrett in London, and studied conducting with Christopher Phelps.
As an accompanist he has performed extensively in different places, mainly working with young performers, but also in Music Theatre, taking part in many amateur premieres in York. He has also performed in the Purcell Room on the South Bank, and in various choral concerts. He has conducted choirs in various parts of the UK, performing many of the larger and smaller popular choral works, plus concerts with a much lighter style of music. John is also Musical Director of the Balsham Singers and Director of Music at St. Andrew’s Church, Stapleford

Come and join us. Don’t be shy. You will be assured of a warm welcome.
